These were the first games to allow the player to adopt multiple pets, which could interact with one another. Magic went on to then release Dogz 2 and Catz 2 (1997). This naming convention is followed in all variants of the game: Dogz 2 and Catz 2 combined are called "Petz 2", and so on.

The two games allowed for the adoption of one pet per install and could not be combined, but are often lumped together as "Petz 1" in community terminology. Magic in 1995, with Catz released a year later. Dogz was the very first Petz game to be released by P.F.Several iterations of the games were released throughout the series' history.

From there, they decided to make the "cutest, least offensive game possible," and the series was born. Magic had received complaints about the violence of their previous game. Popular activities within the fandom include hexing (modding petz), breeding and showing, with fans also creating videos and artwork of petz. Not all members of the Petz Community would describe their community as a fandom, however, and instead just prefer to refer to it as the Petz Community. The fandom is collectively known as the "Petz Community" or PC. The community sometimes calls these Unbisoft games "Ubipetz." Ubisoft produced a line of "petz" games only similar in title, however they are a completely different line of games.

The community does not consider games released by Ubisoft after Petz 5 as a part of the fandom. Ubisoft acquired the Petz series in the 2000s. There are two spin-off games (Oddballz and Babyz) that are sometimes included within the Petz fandom depending on who is asked, as they are based on the same A.I. The title "Petz" refers to the combination of two games, Dogz and Catz, which revolve around adopting puppies and kittens, feeding and playing with them, and other activities like training and breeding them. As far as these things go, this is good stuff.Petz is a fandom that covers the Petz computer games released by P.F. The visuals are also nice and sharp, with plenty of detail and lots of personality to the dogs, while the educational content is well implemented and mixed nicely with the entertainment aspects. There's a huge range of options to play around with here, so you've got a lot of lasting appeal. This is obviously aimed at a casual audience, but if you number yourself amongst that crowd and enjoy looking after virtual pets, then this does exactly what you need it to. The graphics have also seen an overhaul, while there's also lots more costumes to buy, more toys and a day/night cycle. The new features available here include the ability to birth multiple pups when your dog breeds, more breeds to choose from, more minigames and new backgrounds to play on. After that, it's basically your job to look after this dog, taking it for walks, petting it, buying it new toys and so on. The basic concept sees the player adopting a pet dog, choosing from a number of breeds and then customizing them with a new name and suchlike. This one is quite similar to earlier installments but also introduces a number of new elements which help keep it feeling fresh. Hardcore gamers are obviously likely to sniff at this one, but if you've got youngsters and are interested in introducing them to real world animals as pets, it's actually a pretty good primer.

There's a huge amount of pet simulators in this franchise, including Petz, Catz and Dogz, and there's no prizes for guessing what sort of animal this one concentrates on.
